Review- Four Phantoms by Bell Witch

Seattle's  Bell Witch is a two man project formed by Dylan Desmond and Adrian Guerra, they recently released a four track release entitled Four Phantoms. At a lengthy hour and six minutes, this release is an experience in its own right. I had found these guys through bandcamp surfing, as I've found a number of artists I've reviewed. I have to say I'm a newcomer to the funeral doom genre and this is a great act to get into them by for sure.
To start, the production value on this release is phenomenal, it's very smooth and everything is very audible and well put together. The feeling of depressing, soul crushing sadness is very prevalent through the release and I would definitely give them points for the almost medieval feeling they give to their sound. Producer Billy Anderson definitely did a phenomenal job with this one.
Instrumentally I am nothing but surprised with how loud and full a two man act can be. The bass is rattling, meditative and depressive, the drums give great feeling to the tracks and are at a perfect pace. The vocals are really where this release shines, they give the greatest emotion and depth which to me is key for this release's grade. In total, I have to give this release a solid 8/10.

Listen to Bell Witch's new release here!

Review- "Run Wild, Young Beauty" by Hotel Books

On April 7th, 2015, Hotel Books released their sophomore Lp, Run Wild, Young Beauty. Sophomore albums have always been a big deal; fans of the older work eagerly wait to see what the group has next. Will they sell out? Have they taken on a new sound? Though new to Hotel Books’ work, I too was eager to see what they had in store. Thankfully, I was not disappointed and I would be shocked if anyone else who has an appreciation for music is. Despite many line-up changes, with frontman Cameron Smith being the only original member, the group has stuck to their passionate sound and tear-jerking lyrics.
One of my favorite things about Hotel Books is their tendency to be forward while still being poetic. Run Wild, Young Beauty displays that perfectly. The album introduces itself with a light, almost simple, melodic tune before Cameron’s powerful voice comes over it with his even more powerful lyrics. Just like the first time Hotel Books had reached my ears, I found it hard to keep myself from getting emotional. It’s hard to even tell you about how beautiful the music itself is when my mind always wanders to the lyrics. The instrumentals itself is beautiful and emotional, in a much calmer way than the vocals. The contradiction is perfect. The group has delivered an incredible album, and they’ve definitely still stuck to their own unique sound- without being repetitive or sounding like they're trying too hard. As someone who is extremely enthusiastic about poetry and lyrics, all I want to do is tell you how meaningful and beautiful they are, but it's hard to do that without just copying and pasting my favorite lines. All I can tell you is that this album nearly broke the scale and gets a definite 10/10. Whether you're enjoying the weather on a nice day or in need of comfort, this album will be good for you. It's available for streaming on YouTube, Spotify and available for purchase through InVogue's website and iTunes.

Review- coins by AMOEDO

AMOEDO, Long Island-based electronic musician and vice president/co-founder of the art label Foursix, has done a lot for himself in the last few months- his first EP, coins, was just released on April 6th… 4/6, rather. As someone who only recently started appreciating electronic music, I can honestly say this EP made me appreciate it more. I know “electronic music” is a very, very broad term, but there is no way to accurately pinpoint the exact genre of this album. At times it’s ambient, and at other times it sounds like chiptune. It’s a unique blend of the two. It’s playful and light-hearted, but has a sense of maturity about it.
The four song EP opens up with “rain drops”, which is also the longest song on the album- just under two minutes long. The first time I listened to it, it didn’t entirely catch my attention. It turns out I was just biased, probably because it was only seven in the morning. The introduction to the piece is slow at first, and very peaceful, but bit-by-bit AMOEDO introduces more upbeat sounds over the original loop, while keeping the peaceful undertone. It’s ambient, but also lively, and gives the listener a good idea as to what they have in store for them. 8.5/10
The second song, “mint”, also has an ambient sound, but definitely different from the opening track. It’s more repetitive, but not necessarily boring. About halfway into the song, AMOEDO throws an interesting break- the original loop fades out with a much more 8-bit sound slowly coming over it, without being too intrusive or completely changing the song. Though not my personal favorite on the album, definitely not something I would regret listening to. 8/10
Third track, also the title track, “coins”, is beautiful, but strange. Much like the other tracks, it comes off as ambient and almost calm, but also has the sense of playfulness previously mentioned. It’s hard to accurately describe the sound in writing, but if you even remotely enjoy electronic music, you will most likely enjoy this- especially if you enjoy happy songs. There’s an air of positivity and energy to it, that you can only really experience in listening to it. 10/10
“jukebox”, the closing track, is the most pumped up and energetic song on the album. The beginning sounds almost like MGMT, so if you enjoy them I would check this song out, but it still sticks to AMOEDO’s unique sound. It’s something that definitely gives the listener the urge to move, but without being too overbearing; it also sounds like something that you can unwind to, two things that I don’t believe are easy to mix. 9/10

AMOEDO lists his musical influences for the EP as Jahnei, Verdé Madera, Cashmere Cat, Lido, and Sam Gellaitry. Jahnei and Verdé Madera are also artists on Foursix, so if you enjoy AMOEDO I would highly recommend looking into their music. Altogether, the album gets a 9/10. It is available for free download on both AMEODO's SoundCloud and the Foursix website.

Dual Review - Good Kid, M.A.A.D City/To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar

Ladies, Gentlemen and Music Nerds, I hope everyone’s having a good day!  Today I’m here with the rapidly up and coming Hip Hop Rap sensation, Kendrick Lamar and his two HUGE releases Good Kid, M.A.A.D City (2013) and To Pimp A Butterfly (2015).  Yet another Dr. Dre prodigal success story, Kendrick Motherfucking Lamar is the very definition of “Coming Up” in the Hip Hop game.  Kendrick doesn’t put an insane amount of thought into what he does and what he raps about, he has a story to tell and he just tells it.  You can tell the authenticity of all of his lyrics just by the way he represents himself and the way he talks about all of the things he does.
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City and To Pimp A Butterfly were two completely different albums in so many ways.  First off,  let me start off by saying I loved both albums, they’re my favorite Hip Hop albums off the time right now and Good Kid made my top 10 albums of all time and To Pimp A Butterfly is on its way.  But what I loved so much about Good Kid was that it tells such a deep story, it tells the story of his brother who was shot in an act of gang violence after he met a girl named Sherane at a party who he eventually hooked up with.  This all took place in his sophomore year of high school, and it depicts all of kendrick’s childhood dreams of money, sex, and overall just blowing up in Compton USA.  Good Kid overall has a great story line that is just so easy and entertaining to follow. Featuring some huge names like Jay Rock, Drake, and more.  In the track "Sing About Me, Dying Of Thirst" Kendrick furthers the story by actually talking more about his brother who was shot and just all of these great lyrics and beats add to the emotional impact of the album.  He shows how many different sides of himself were conflicting at this time between (again) sex, money, drugs, alcohol, his mother, his father, his friends, and more im sure he just spins a tale of how he really came up and came to be the guy that he is today.
Now, To Pimp A Butterfly (as far as I can tell) isn’t anything like Good Kid in the way of the story line.  To be honest I kind of like that the two aren’t the same,  To Pimp A Butterfly is just such a genius work in itself and it highlights my previous point that Kendrick doesn’t exactly follow any sort of standards that there are in the hip hop industry,  he literally just thinks of how he wants it and does it and makes it work. This is best highlighted in the tracks “Institutionalized” and “For Free?-Interlude”.  Kendrick makes all of his influences so prevalent on this album especially on the more jazzy songs like “King Kunta” and even “These Walls”.  Ill admit, at first this style of music was so foreign to me and I honestly didn’t know how to feel about it but once you accept that this is how Kendrick is and how he raps then it only gets better from there.

This review was one that I was extremely excited about doing for the longest time, my ending rank for these albums are, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City – 10/10 and To Pimp A Butterfly- 9/10

Enter Shikari, Stray From The Path, A Lot Like Brids, and I, The Mighty at The Gramercy Theatre 4/3/15

Last Friday, Enter Shikari played at The Gramercy Theatre. They are on a tour supporting their new album, The Mindsweep, that came out back in January. Enter Shikari are a metal mixed with electronica band from England. Mixing metal and EDM sounds like a bad idea but what Enter Shikari does is totally unique and different. Despite the EDM based material, they don't attract that crowd and a lot of metalcore fans dig this band. Gramercy Theatre was the venue and this is the smallest venue I ever seen Enter Shikari played before. This venue only holds about 500 people or more. For a venue with a barricade, its okay. It's not the best nor the worst.
The first band of the night was I, The Mighty. This will be my second time seeing them and also it will be my first time seeing them with a barricade. They are a progressive post-hardcore band from San Francisco, CA. The band got a good reaction from the crowd, especially a pit, which I thought was weird. I, The Mighty aren't really a heavy band. They are heavily influence by Circa Survive and Coheed and Cambria. The band wasn't really my type of music but their sound was great. I recommend seeing this band if you are a fan of the bands I mentioned before.
The second band of night was A Lot Like Birds. They are from Sacramento, CA and are a progressive driven post-hardcore band. They were a lot different from I, The Mighty. I never got the chance to check out this band before hand. There are a six piece band while 3/4 of the bands that were playing that night were a four piece band. This band brought something different to the table. There were two singers, two guitarists, a bassist, and a drummer. The first two songs I was digging because it reminded me of At The Drive-In and The Blood Brothers. The rest of the set I started to dislike them because it was becoming I Set My Friends on Fire and I wasn't having that at all. They got really annoying real fast and I stopped liking them. I wasn't really a fan of this band.
The third band of the night, Stray From The Path, is a hardcore band from Long Island, New York. They mix their hardcore influences with Rage Against The Machine and Deftones. This was my sixth time seeing them and my fourth time at this venue. Stray also never disappoints and last Friday they were on point. The only thing that sucks was that not a lot of people are really into them but they have a great live performance. What was great about this set was that they played a lot of songs from Make Your Own History and Rising Sun, which was really cool and they also did a cover The Ramones "Blitzkrieg Bop". The pit was crazy for them and people were going off for them. Definitely a great time seeing this band. If you haven't seen this band, you're messing up big time.
Enter Shikari was the final band of the night and its been two years since I've seen this band. This was my third time seeing them and I missed them the last year warped tour. I gave their new album The Mindsweep a listen. I didn't like it the first time listening to it, but the second time I enjoyed it a lot. Seeing them playing the new songs, including "Radiate", was amazing. Plus I think it was one of the longest sets I've ever seen at the Gramercy Theatre. By far one of the best times I ever had at an Enter Shikari show. They could have played some old songs but they were amazing. I enjoy seeing this band time after time. Probably one of the most fun band to see live and they aren't a ska band. The drummer was the only member that didn't play in the crowd. Seriously one of the best live bands of today. If you haven't seen this band you are missing out.
Enter Shikari- 9.75/10
Stray From The Path- 9/10
A Lot Like Birds- 6/10

Review- Youth by Kanibeat

Yesterday, Russian producer Kanibeat put out a ten track release on Cult Classic Records called Youth. I stumbled upon this release through surfing new releases on bandcamp and I have to say this was a pleasant surprise among other producers I have found who make essentially the same redundant stuff. What I really felt was that this release told a sort of story, the way everything flowed through, the use of the samples, painted this picture through ambiance that is rare to find in music these days. What makes it even more interesting is that the feeling of the release goes from a somber, sad sort of feeling to one of revival and happiness. This release takes elements of funk, RnB, jazz and classic hip hop sounds and overall makes for an incredibly enjoyable listening experience.
The production on this release is solid, everything sounds very fluid and well put together, with some really solid use of samples and effects. I'm particularly fond of the chime effects that are used on this release through out. These are tracks that you wouldn't necessarily find in a club, but maybe a restaurant, or a spa even. Overall, this is a solid first release from Kanibeat and earns itself an 8/10 and I hopefully will hear more from him in the coming future.

New Found Glory, Turnstile, This Wild Life, and Turnover at The Paramount 3/29/15

Two weeks ago, I finally got the chance to see New Found Glory. NFG is a pop-punk band from Coral Springs, Florida and has been around since the late 90's. The tour was a very diverse lineup. The show was located at the Paramount in Huntington, which is coming down to be one of my favorite venues that has a barricade. Very clean and well run, I recommend seeing a show there. This was also my first time coming here and not seeing The Dropkick Murphys.
The first band of night Turnover. Turnover is from Virginia Beach, VA. Turnover was really sad and soft. To be honest, I thought I was going to like this band. Before this show, I checked out their material and I liked it. Turnover was a song into their set when I got in, but they played nothing but new stuff. They kind of put me to sleep. I really didn't care for this band. I would try again to get into them, but their live performance turned me off.
The second band, This Wild Life, is from Long Beach, CA. This is a duo where one member is playing an acoustic guitar, while the other is playing an electric guitar. Another band on this lineup I truly did not care for. The only thing I like about this band was the use of electric guitar. The acoustic guitar was playing open chords and the electric was playing quiet leads. I wasn't really a fan of this band but check them out if you like this style. It's not folk-punk, so I wasn't too into it.
Third band of the night Turnstile. Turnstile are a hardcore band from Baltimore, MD. This is my fifth time seeing this band and every time I see them they get better and better. Once they started, a massive pit opened up for them. It got so big that security was near the pit for anything upcoming.   My only problem with this set was that there was a barricade, and there should never be a barricade when Turnstile performs. This was also the longest set I've ever seen by them and they played two covers. One was from Minor Threat and Inside Out. Turnstile played a mix of old and new songs. The reaction from the pit was great but from what I saw, people up front were trying to stay away from the pit. One of the best hardcore pits I ever been in.  Turnstile is always a great band to see live and if you've never seen them, you're missing out.
The headline act, New Found Glory, took the stage and the place erupted. Now, I didn't know this but the lead singer Jordan Pundik broke his foot and he's been performing with a boot on. Still, NFG was great and it was cool hear "Hit or Miss" and "My Friends Over You". Pundik still has a great stage presence and they were a lot of fun. I thought I wasn't going to be into them, but the crowd liked them. I'm glad I'm finally saw them. The main reason I went was to see Turnstile again but NFG were really good. If you like pop-punk, then go see this band.
New Found Glory- 8.75/10
Turnstile- 9.5/10
This Wild Life- 6/10
Turnover- 6.5/10
The Paramount- 9.5/10

Review- Vol. 1 by Lords of Venus

Lords of Venus is a stoner metal/psych doom band from Whittier Canifornia, they recently put out this LP entitled Vol. 1 and I was extremely impressed by it. Following the formula of many other bands in the genre such as Black Pyramid, this record has entered a special place for me as a good jam out/relax release for sure.
To start, the production on this record is very nice, with vibes of just this psychedelic experience. The production has no audible audio hiccups or anything of the sort really, wonderfully mastered in my opinion. Instrumentally this release has some incredibly strong riffs, wicked solos and overall an enjoyable guitar experience. The drums and bass give great feeling to these tracks, and add to the experience of just this psychedelic experience. Vocally this release has these lethargic sounding, almost ethereal vocals which just add to this experience I've been talking about. Overall this release gets a solid 8/10, and I hope to hear a full release from this band sometime soon!

The Last Ten Seconds of Life interview

I got a chance to talk to Wyatt from The Last Ten Seconds of Life very briefly recently, here's what he had to say!

PB- To start, who are you and what do you do in the band

Wyatt- I'm Wyatt from the Last Ten Seconds of Life, and I play guitar.

PB- What are some of your influences musically?

Wyatt- Alice in Chains, I was just listening to Ozzy Osborne today, Ingested, Carnifex. There are so many really.

PB- How did you end up getting started with The Last Ten Seconds of Life?

Wyatt- We all met at college, Mansfield university, we all met there and we were trying to start a band, so that's really it.

PB- So what are some of your guilty pleasure bands?

Wyatt- Um, I listen to alot of indie, like Grizzly Bear, This Town Needs Guns, every now and again I listen to alot of rap and pop.

PB- Do you guys have anything new in the works music wise?

Wyatt- Not Right now, no, our new record came out in January so we're gonna tour on that for a little while so for now no.

PB- And finally, any shout outs?

Wyatt- Uhh, I mean, if I had to shout out anybody it'd be all the kids who come out to our shows. Especially on this run, it's really meant alot to us.

Spring Mixtape 2015

Last Saturday March 28 East Coast Collective put on their annual fest that brings out the best bands from punk, hardcore, pop punk, and emo. This year the fest was one day and took place at Revolution Music Hall in Amityville, New York. The lineup was Title Fight, Bane, Pianos Become The Teeth, Defeater, Superheaven, Capital, GIVE, Hotel Books, High Card, and Soda Bomb. As a member of Patrician Music Reviews I personally like to thank East Coast Collective for putting this show together.
First band of the fest was Soda Bomb. Soda Bomb are kinda like a pop-punk/emo band. They come from Long Island. This is pretty awesome and must have been an honor to open up a fest on Long Island. Soda Bomb I walked into their second song and they seems really good. Mix of what I mention before but more of a punk rock attention. This was my first time seeing them and they were pretty good. I recommend this local Long Island band.
The second band of the fest was High Card. High Card are a heavily 1980's hardcore band from Long Island. This was my second time seeing this band. Also second time seeing them play at Revolution and playing a fest. High Card I enjoy a lot because they really enjoy the old style of hardcore. It sucks not a lot people were there for them but they were great. High Card also perform a cover of "Fix Me" by Black Flag. I recommend seeing this band because if you like 1980's hardcore bands like Minor Threat and Bad Brains then check them out.
The next band of the fest was Hotel Books. Hotel Books are an indie rock and spoken word bands. They are from Porterville, CA. Probably one of the most interesting bands of the fest. With using the elements of emotion and spoken word brought something new to the table. We see bands like Being As An Ocean and La Dispute do this but Hotel Books is not about being poetic. It seems like the lyrics are all reflecting around the lead singer life. Hotel Books were very interesting and I would totally recommend seeing them if you into the spoken word thing.
The next band of the band was one of the bands I was looking forward to see. GIVE are a rock band from Washington D.C. GIVE was fantastic. Such a great band live and they play so well. It's hard to say what they really are. It seems they really are based off Dischord Records band from the 1980's like bands Embrace, Rites of Spring, and Fugazi. Amazing and I want to see this band again and again. Songs off of their LP Sonic Boom sounded great. If you like really this style of punk then check out this band. I hope I can see this band soon.
The fifth band of the fest was Capital. Capital are a hardcore band from Long Island. I didn't know much about this band before and I expecting that this would be heavy or something. Capital weren't heavy but this did not disappointment me. I actually liked this band a lot because just like High Card and Bane they are a fun hardcore band. Nothing but sing along and stage diving. What I found interesting is that the members of Capital seemed to be in the 40's and they were a lot of people at my age group going off for them. I think that's really cool for kids my age grabbing the mic and stage diving for them. Capital was a really cool band I would like to see this band again and recommend this band.
Now it's time for the second part of the lineup. Superheaven was up and this probably was the loudest band of the night. Superheaven are heavily influence grunge band from Pennsylvania. My first time seeing them and they were amazing. Superheaven had just such a loud fuzz tone and they played every song I loved from them. I couldn't believe how crazy it got for them. People were stage diving like crazy and a lot of movement in the crowd. I really enjoyed them a lot. They were amazing. Even the new song they release the week prior "I've Been Bored" sounded awesome. Most of the songs of the set was from the album Jar which was amazing to finally hear these songs live.  Hopefully I would be able to see this band sometime soon. Amazing live Superheaven was.
Defeater was up next. Defeater are a melodic hardcore band from Boston, MA. This band I've been interested in seeing. I'm not big into melodic hardcore and I was off to the side of all of the action. The set was okay and I wasn't really into them. I've listen to them prior to this and I like it. I am not taking anything away from this band when they played but I wasn't my liking. They got a good crowd reaction though which is very good. Defeater were okay for me and if you are a fan of melodic hardcore and this band would be a great fit for your taste.
Pianos Become The Teeth. The band I really didn't not care for while they were on stage. PBTT are from Baltimore, Maryland and are an emo band. I really didn't care for this band at all. I'm not saying they played bad it just wasn't my cup of tea. Listening to their stuff I dig it but I guess seeing them live wasn't really my liking. It seemed no one was really into them from what I remember.
Up Next was Bane and this was my third time seeing this band. Also probably my best time seeing this band. I loved this band so much and their live performance is amazing. Bane is an hardcore band from Worchester, MA. Bane has been around for twenty years and this year they are calling it quits this year. From start to finish the set was amazing and starting off with "Ante Up." Bane played the longest I ever seen and I'm glad they played that long. The pit was a lot of fun and rushing up to sing along was great also. So much stage dives during Bane. I can see them time after time. I'm upset they are breaking up this year but I'm glad I saw them more than once. Please if you get the chance see this band before they break up do it you wont regret it.
The Final band of the night Title Fight. This is was my first time seeing this band. For three years I only liked one song until I heard their new album Hyperview which made me an instance fan. Title Fight are from Kingston, PA and are a punk band the fuses around melodic hardcore, pop-punk, and shoegaze. From Start to finish Title Fight was amazing. I would never want to miss this band when they comeback. They started off the set with "Murder your memory" then went gun blazing into "Shed". The reaction from the crowd was amazing. Long Island really loves this band a lot and Title Fight were so great. So many stage dives and people singing along to every song. Mostly I was going off to the new songs but still when "Symmetry" was being played I went off. I wish I could see this band night after night with no barricade. Probably one of the best bands right now. If you haven't seen Title Fight your missing out big time.
