Last
Friday, Life of Agony played a two night stand at a Brooklyn venue called The
Wick. This was their first time playing in Brooklyn with the original line up in
years. Life of Agony is a metal/hardcore band from Brooklyn, New York and was
formed in 1989. The band lead singer was a man named Keith Caputo and now is
Mina Caputo after a sex change operation. This is pretty interesting and
amazing because these shows were both sold out. What great about this, is that people
are open minded about the leader singer being a girl now. The Venue was the
Wick which is right next to the Well. What was interesting is that they are
both connected and at Black N’ Blue 2014, the VIP area was where the Wick
was at.
The
opener of the night was Sumo Cyco. Sumo Cycle is a mix of hardcore and metal.
Very interesting by the mix they brought out and having a female vocalist. The
band is from Canada and I really wasn’t into them. To be honest, there was
nothing really interesting about the band. It’s cool for a band to open up for
Life of Agony, but they weren’t good at all. It seemed like no one really cared
at all. People seemed to be involved more with their drinks, other people and
their phones. Overall the band wasn’t good and I think Life of Agony didn’t want
an act that could blow them away.
Life
of Agony took the stage and my friend push me to start the pit. They opened up
with “Plexiglass Gate” and went into “This Time”. The pit was wild for every
song that was off of River Runs Red.
Mina Caputo was very good and also the vocals were amazing. The entire band was
very tight. The sound was great and so heavy live. From listening their
material in a car, iPod, computer speaker, etc to seeing them live is so
different. The River Runs Red material
was very good live. I didn’t know what to expect from this group, the people I went
with saw them over five times before the sex change. They said Caputo still has a
great voice and they are a very heavy band. The problem I have with Life of Agony is
that they should make new music and tour because playing River Runs Red must be really boring. Still, this show was amazing
and by far the best band playing live music right now, or I should say a band
that’s been around for over twenty five years and still doing it. Life of Agony
started in 1989 and they are still ripping it up. If you haven’t seen this band
you are messing up. Great band to see live and hopefully soon see them again.
Life of Agony- 9/10
Sumo Cycle- 5/10
The Wick- 8.25/10
Concert Overall- 8.5/10
