'Plini - The End of Everything' Album Review

https://plini.bandcamp.com/album/the-end-of-everything

Plini is a project from Sydney, Australia with very new taste to the progressive music scene. This EP sways you into a melodic delusion, grabbing you with the heartfelt emotion the three songs thrive off of. It's like jazz was recreated and modernized with more of a punch of delightful melodies and modernized processed electric guitar EQ's.

This EP has many features of great artists, such as featuring Marco Minnemann on drums, Simon Grove from The Helix Nebula on bass guitar and Luke Martin on Piano. (Many more names are on the contents of the album)

This little three song EP is powerful to the ears and will keep you attached. If you are a fan of Polyphia, Intervals, Animals As Leaders, and the new uprising band Chon and if you haven't listened to Plini yet, go do your ears for massive favor because you will not be disappointed.

(Fun Fact) Plini used to go by the name HALYCON, releasing an EP called Pastures under that name.

Go follow Plini on their social media sites:

REVIEW: loverboy EP by oldsoul

Not long ago, Massachusetts band oldsoul released a four track EP titled loverboy.

The best way to describe the first track on the EP, "Becoming Conscious Of..." can best be described as something TWIABP would release, but with Hayley Williams' voice. That combination is pretty awesome, but otherwise this introductory track sounds like generic emo shoegaze. The good news is, it sounds like good generic emo shoegaze. 7/10

The second track, coincidentally titled "Show Me Something New", definitely sounds more distinguished than the first track, and probably should have been the first track. This song is not only a duet, but has much more passion in it, much more emotion, and truly shows this band's potential. 8/10

"Hurry Up, Loverboy", essentially the title track, does not contain vocals (minus a bridge of some "oh's" and "ah's") but is certainly not unpleasant; in fact, rather enjoyable, coming from someone who doesn't particularly enjoy songs with no vocals. And just like most good instrumentals, it's a relatively brief song, and has enough going on in it (that still goes together well) that it doesn't get too boring. 8/10

"Dean Park", the last and longest track on the EP, brings us back to the somewhat generic, ambient emo sound, but with a splash of new wave; again, something TWIABP or Pity Sex would come up with, but again, it's not bad. This song has vocals, the woman who sounds like Hayley Williams, and it absolutely makes the track. Both well-written, meaningful lyrics and a powerful, passionate voice is my weakness, as it is with many people. It's undeniably worth the seven minutes. 9/10

Total rating: 8/10

loverboy is available on Bandcamp for name your own price, I would recommend typing in a few digits and downloading it.

REVIEW: Deforesters S/T

Just the other day, a Toronto band by the name of Deforesters put out a self titled with four tracks on it. I came across this release by doing my daily search through bandcamp's new releases and overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how good this release is. Deforesters is a four piece act, and totally for fans of The Bouncing Souls, Beach Slang and even Bruce Springsteen. I also pick up alot of vibes from bands like Living With Lions and Polar Bear Club at least vocally.
Sonically this release is totally, as one of my staff put it, Bouncing Souls worship and I can't say that is a bad thing at all for this band. The riffs are phenomenal, with some really catchy leads and solos. The basstone is nice, and also follows up really well with the rest of the accompaniment. The drums are solid, with a really catchy beat and overall.
Vocally, this release is strong, coming in with some very raspy punk rock vocals, in the light of bands like Bouncing Souls, Living with Lions ect. It's a style I personally really dig, especially when it's done right. The whole sound put together is something you can totally get energetic to, and I could imagine people stage diving and getting up in the vocalist's face to shout the words to. I could also totally see this release as a great drinking anthem if you are into that, or even just a great soundtrack for a party.
I think, that overall this is a really great release, and you should totally pick it up off of bandcamp if you get the chance because you certainly won't regret it.

8/10

Pick up the release for free on bandcamp!

Topshelf Records 2015 CMJ Showcase

Last Thursday, Topshelf Records hosted their CMJ showcase at the Brooklyn venue Shea Stadium. The showcase featured some of the bands from label. In total there was seven bands playing and this was a fun show. I was mostly there for Nai Harvest and Donovan Wolfington but a good portion of the bands were great. Plus I never saw any of these bands that were playing that night. Also this was my first ever CMJ event and this was also for free.

The opening band of the night was Lizard Kisses. Lizard Kisses are from Brooklyn, NY and they were a slow opener. As I mention many times before in my reviews I’m not fan of slow openers. Lizard Kisses was not for me but I really liked the instrumentals of the band. The guitars in the band sounded so good and the band kind of had this Post-Rock feel to them. Also they had violin in the band which was crazy because he was also playing with foot pedals. I thought that was wild. Overall I was not really into them but if you love Indie Rock with some Post Rock influences then check them out.

Infinity Girl was up next. This Noise Rock/Shoegaze band from Brooklyn was incredible. They were totally unreal and I loved them just by hearing their first note. Once they were about to play the first note I knew they would be insane. Shoegaze is becoming a big thing again but this band I felt like wasn’t shoegaze they only took the influences. They prove that they can be different and were not trying to copy everyone else today. If you like My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, and Punk Rock this band would totally be for you. I’m 100% seeing Infinity Girl the next time they are playing in NYC.

Clique took the stage and brought it down a level. This band is from Philly and they brought a mild form of Emo. It was very lad back and also very catchy. The band reminded me of chilled out Joyce Manor. I notice people who were up front were singing along and this was the first band of the night that people were going off. Overall Clique was a cool band and I really like their sound.

Solids return the noise to this show with their set. Solids are a two piece band from Montreal, Canada that features a guitarist and a drummer. Also on stage with them were two small spot lights. At first I thought this was going to be so crazy metal band because bands like Cult Leader and Meek is Murder only play with one small spot light on stage. Back to Solids set, they blew me away with the Noise Rock and Punk Rock influences. Solids was something else and it’s really cool them all the way from Canada to play this show. Solids put on a great set and everybody who reads should listen to them.

Up next was Wildhoney a band from Baltimore, Maryland and just by looking at this band I didn’t know what to expect at all. The lead singer looked like the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane, the guitar players look straight out of 1980’s Manchester, and I was like thinking this has to be good. First song I was like wow there so many influences in this band. The lead singer voice was really good and she used a lot of reverb. The Guitars sounded really good and drums were great. I thought I was going to dislike this band they proved me wrong. Wildhoney is a band you don’t want to sleep on.

Donovan Wolfington came on and I was in awe. This Indie-Punk band is from NOLA and they were a lot of fun. Someone try to start a pit but that failed. I felt not a lot of people were going off for them. I know I was and I thought they had the best set of the night. Donovan Wolfington was great. I just recently got into this band over the summer and seeing them really amazed me. Their style is great and their looks are great. The new album that came out this year How to Treat the Ones you Love is a great album and everybody should go get it. This is another band that will rule the underground so you better go to see this band and support this band.

The final band of the night Nai Harvest came across the pond from Sheffield, UK. This band is a two piece like Solids but a different style of music. Nai Harvest is extremely influenced by the 90’s both American and British rock. Nai Harvest was great because their songs are catchy and just flow all together. The only band bad part of this set was after each song people left which sucked because they really are a good band. Overall is this miss show you mess up because this was probably one of the best free shows I ever been and a lot of these bands that played were good.

Nai Harvest- 9/10

Donovan Wolfington- 10/10

Wildhoney- 8.75/10

Solids- 9/10

Clique- 7.75/10

Infinity Girl- 9.5/10

Liard Kisses- 7/10

REVIEW- Rogue Taxidermy by Days N Daze

In the late August of 2013, one of the most entertaining albums in the folk punk genre was released.

Quite possibly one of the very few albums I will ever give a ten out of ten, Days N Daze's Rogue Taxidermy is absolute gold. The album artwork accurately represents what it sounds like; a mesh of different styles, sounds and influences sewn together into some kind of of odd, almost crude, but interesting piece. Rogue Taxidermy is classified as folk punk; but that is a misleading title. It's much angrier than what one thinks of when they hear the term "folk punk," and much more harsh. There's almost a hint of Descendent's in the content; a majority of the lyrics are about dissatisfaction with everyday life, anger towards a majority of society, disrespecting authority, and experiencing changes in life.

If you are someone who enjoys clean, clear vocals, this album will not be for you. There are two vocalists- one female and one male. The female does have a lovely voice, but quite the juxtaposition when put next to the male vocals- high pitched, rugged, and harsh. When I heard the first track of this album, "Rockabilly Impending Deathfuture", I was not ready for what I was about to hear. What starts out as a few soft chords quickly turns into what can only be described as incredibly angry ska, with what almost sounds like mariachi music, and this man with a high pitched, cracking voice yelling- which then transitions into something that almost sounds bluesy. The album consists of sixteen similar tracks, but none that sound too alike to the point of repetition; again, there are songs featuring the female vocalist as well. Though this album is long, it is well worth the listen. It sounds like something you could dance to in a dive bar in a hipster part of Brooklyn or day drink on your couch to alone, and the lyrical content could fit either of those situations. Congratulations, Days N Daze. Ten out of ten.

Days N Daze is a DIY band from Texas. Rogue Taxidermy is available on Bandcamp for fifty cents and on various other streaming sites and online music stores.

REVIEW- Exitium EP by Castiel

Klagenfurt based downtempo band Castiel not too long ago, put out their 5 track EP entitled Exitium. Now I had found out about this band almost completely by accident. A few of my friends had known who they were but I found them I believe through a breakdown video compilation by hearing the breakdown in their song Phantom. I was absolutely blown the fuck away by how heavy this band is upon listening, and quite possibly the heaviest band we've reviewed to date on this publication.
Sonically, this band is nothing short of the epitome of an assbeater, with some of the heaviest guitars I've heard since Black Tongue released their first EP. It's heavy as hell but at the same time incredibly atmospheric in the darkest possible way. It's not very complex in the way of guitars, or bass for that matter, the drums do get complex in some parts because of some very great slams, I happen to really enjoy the progressions and the drum patterns on this whole release. It's formulaic and I think it works incredibly well for this band, they clearly know what the hell they're doing and it shows on just how phenomenally heavy this record is.
I wanted to touch more upon the vocals though, which are some of the best growled vocals I've heard in a very, VERY long time. On the titular track you can hear just how amazing he is, with a growl that lasts for almost 17 seconds, and on the track Phantom which is not on this release, it goes for almost 30.
In short, this record earns a solid 8/10, its super heavy and ignorant, while still remaining enjoyable and shows the talent of the musicians playing.

James Boss Backyard show feat. Daisychain, Table Talk, Nice Shot Kid, Depresant, Check Engine Light. 10/10/15

Last Saturday I attended a back yard show in Deer Park, Long Island. The backyard show was presented by Babetalk and Terminally Trill. The head writer of James Boss had this show in his own backyard. This is not the first time he has backyard show in his but back in July he had an all day festival that was dedicated to his neighbors. Both shows are benefit shows and there were about forty people that showed up. Besides the headliner Daisychain every band was from Long Island. This was my second show of the weekend that was DIY. Everyone who had a part of this show thank you and helpfully we could do more. A little side not everyone in these bands are the coolest people so listen and support these bands.

The opening band was Check Engine Light. Check Engine Light are a local Pop-Punk trio. Two of the members are brothers in fact twins which this was a first for me seeing Twins playing together in a band. They were a good to start off this show. The songs sounded really good and they even covered Taylor Swift. I always love hearing Top 40 songs being covered and turn into a Punk song. Overall Check Engine Light was really good. Make sure you check them out and also they will be playing a festival in Pittsburg, PA on December 13 that features Yellowcard and Citizen.

The second band of the show was Depressant. This band I felt like they really love Title Fight and put a lot of that style music into their music. Their music was something really cool and I’m glad I saw them. Depressant was really good and probably my favorite band of the day. This band should be big because the music sounded so great and I love the switch between two vocals. Also the pedals they had sounded so amazing. Everything about this band was great and they even performed a My Chemical Romance cover. Long Island is lucky to have this band to be from here.

Up next was Nice Shot Kid. Nice Shot Kid is a Four Year Strong and Easycore worship band. This is my sixth time seeing this band and I love them every time I see them. I’m not really a big fan of Pop Punk bands playing breakdowns but their music flows so well. The mix of easycore riffs with the Pop Punk singers just goes perfect with them. I personally think this band is 100% times better than bands like A Day to Remember, Four Year Strong, Chunk No Captain Chunk. These guys got a good reaction from the crowd and people were singing along.  Like I said before if you like the band I mention you will love this band.

Table Talk was up and I found out they used to be called Last Great Hero. I thought Table Talk was just a new band but I actually saw them last year. Table Talk was a cool band and they had a really good sound. They really had an Indie Punk sound but overall they were good. They had two singers, one of them I wasn’t a big fan of his vocals but he played well. Support this band because they were really good live and they have good songs.

Daisychain was up next and they were great. I mention before they were the only band not from Long Island. The band is from Peekskill, NY. They were a lot fun. Daisychain brought this Rock n Roll experience to this show. They really loved to play live and they got a good reaction. I notice some people singing along and going off for them. Just like that I become a fan of this band and they were perfect to close out the day with. A lot of love for this band hopefully I get a chance to see this band again. If you get a chance you must see this band plus their debut LP came out last month. Overall Saturday was a great day; shout out to all of the bands, James Boss, and U A DUB CRUE.
