A brief history of Queercore, past and present.

With the SCOTUS ruling on same sex marriage, I thought it prudent to discuss something musically based in light of it. "Queercore" or "Homocore" as it was formerly known was a genre that started out in the mid 80's with bands such as The Dicks and Big Boys as well as other bands writing songs with a message of anti homophobia such as MDC(Millions of Dead Cops) and 7 Second, and The Nip Drivers with their song dedicated to Quentin Crisp who was a queer English writer and storyteller.
Other mediums where "queercore" began to blossom were in the form of fanzines such as J.D.s. penned by GB Jones. The genre would expand further in the late 1990's with many more bands taking the identity, and the movement to a further level, mainly because of J.D.s. releasing a cassette entitled J.D.s. Top Ten Homocore Hits with bands such as Fifth Column, Nikki Parasite, Big Man, and Bomb, as well as acts such as The Apostles, Academy 23, No Brain Cell, and Gorse. Other bands in the 90's also took the cause, with bands like Los Crudos and Go! having outspoken queer members.
Some other bands in the genre at this time worth noting as well would be

  •    Anti Scrunti Faction
  • God Is My Copilot
  • Pansy Division
  • Sister George
  • Tribe 8
  • Mulkilteo Fairies
  • Behead The Prophet NLSL

Throughout the 90's many other Zines in the punk scene sprouted up either supporting or being directly involved in the LGBTQIA+ movement(though the acronym wasn't as long back then) such as Chainsaw and Outpunk. Chainsaw becoming a record label that signed many queercore acts. Many zines began to associate with either paganism or Riot Grrrl and still others with Anarchism most of all.
In 2002, 4 and 6 Homo A-go-go was a festival held in Olympia Washington that was almost entirely devoted to the genre, and in September 2005 a book was published entitled Homocore: The Loud and Raucous Rise of Queer Rock. The early 2000's also saw bands like Limp Wrist(a SXE band) and the Electropop group Gravy Train!!! and the indie rock outfit Butch Vs. Femme.
The scene is burgeoning currently in England, and in the states many bands take on the identity and cause. Bands such as Senses Fail with their outspoken queer vocalist Buddy, the trans hardcore band G.L.O.S.S. (who we've reviewed on this blog before), Body Betrayal, Bleed The Pigs, Girl Crush, Damn Broads, Panic At The Disco! Deafheaven and many many more now would fit this category in its own right, whether having openly queer members or being very vocal on the issue.

In my opinion, this is such a diverse genre, and I would highly recommend checking out any of these bands, looking up the zines and finding your own way, this blog wholeheartedly supports freedom to love whoever, be whoever and fuck whoever you want, BE YOU, LOVE YOURSELF AND WHOEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT!!!
