Classic review- When The Kite String Pops by Acid Bath

Way back in the 90's, a sludge metal band by the name of Acid Bath released one of the most quintessential sludge albums of all time in my opinion. That album is When The Kite String Pops, released in 1994 on Rotten Records.
Production wise, this album just fills you with a deranged sort of dread that rarely is felt in an album. The grainy effects on all the tracks, combined with spill effects and feedback use just make it all that more unnerving. Instrumentally this album is a masterpiece of sludge, with crunchy, blues infused guitars that signify their southern roots, A bass that has a rattly, loose feeling to it that adds to the effect of the whole album and slow, rhythmic drums this album is absolutely flawless. Vocally Dax Riggs gives one of the strongest performances I've heard in the genre, with sometimes bluesy vocals that have a strong vibrato, that give a feeling of dread and sadness. They melt very well with the instrumentals, and then turn almost immediately to a rough high scream that just sends chills down your spine.
Lyrically this album is positively phenomenal, Dax writes some of the most deranged, dread inspired and poetic lyrics. Dealing with themes of drug use, abortion, killing your parents, death and destruction, the follow a themes that are fairly common in the genre but also do it in their own unique way. One of my favorite tracks on the album is Scream of the Butterfly, one of their most well known tracks.
All in all, I have to give this album a 10/10, an absolute classic in underground/sludge music which I would reccomend you all check out as soon as you can.
