Review: Lil Spook(Spooky Black)-Black Silk

Minnesota vaporwave/cloud rap artist Spooky Black in March of last year released his mixtape Black Silk. Nothing for nothing, this guy comes across as just another one of these 'sadboys' that vaporwave is known for all over the internet with their Arizona Iced Teas and bucket hats. However I feel that Spooky Black brings something different to the table with this mixtape.
At first listen, the beats on this mixtape are insanely well produced and relaxing. Spooky Black worked with producers Greaf, DJ Luxurious, Flue and Earth on Black Silk and their skill shows for sure. Some of my favorite tracks here were 'Without U', 'Remember Me' and Forest Sounds. The airy, ethereal beats make for a great relaxation or chill out mix. The lyricism of Spooky Black is far from aggressive as per most rappers this day in age, which is somewhat as to why I appreciate him. The lyrics are particularly about relationships or a relationship and probably about a peticular girl in general. This makes the lyrics relatable to an audience of vaporwave fans that frequently seem to be 'sad' as the connotation of 'sadboy' appears to have and which drew me in, as a somber, chill out album. He followed up recently with an EP of similar quality called Leaving which was one of my favorite rap/vaporwave releases of the year.
Overall, I give Black Silk a 7/10 because of the flawless execution of a cloud rap/vaporwave album. The beats and lyricism are on point and overall this was a very enjoyable release by Spooky Black. I would highly recommend listening to this release to relax to.
